However, Stanley Bresh, JNF regional director, said follow-up phone calls during the next three weeks should bring the total to more than $65,000. An October internal audit of the JNF revealed that only 21 percent of the agency's total expenditures made its way to Israel. The agency was found guilty of sloppy accounting procedures, but neither fraud nor malfeasance. The JNF recently replaced its former president, Milton Shapiro, with cosmetics heir Ronald Lauder, and laid off several staffers as part of cost-cutting measures. Bresh said these incidents have not affected the campaign. "We were extremely pleased by the response we got from talking to people. We updated them on the organization," Bresh said.
