May is healing month for Jewish community

Sign up for Weekday J and get the latest on what's happening in the Jewish Bay Area.

"Gesundheit! To Your Health!," a family education activity day, will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at Jewish Community Library, 639-14th Ave., S.F. Sponsors include Jewish Family Education Project of the Bureau of Jewish Education, and guests will include Drs. Abby Caplin and Ami Goodman.

Kids will sing songs about health awareness, listen to stories during the library's regular Book Time session and make get-well cards for those who are ailing.

Providing a chance to reflect on memories of loss — whether by death of other circumstances — Ruach Ami's Rabbi Miriam Senturia will lead Azkarah, a Yizkor service of healing and memory at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 22 at Congregation Sherith Israel, 2266 California St., S.F.

Sponsors include Hebrew Free Loan Association, the Board of Rabbis of Northern California and Sinai Memorial Chapel.

Healing month events began with "Grief and Growing: A Healing Weekend for Bereaved Families" last weekend at Camp Tawonga. In addition to the camp and Ruach Ami, sponsors included S.F.-based Jewish Family and Children's Services.

An annotated bibliography, prepared by the Library's Jonathan Schwartz, provides an overview of resources.
