Local events remember Holocausts youngest victims

"Teaching Children about Tolerance" is a workshop for parents, given by Lee Ann Slayton of Parents Place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 15.

A poetry reading and workshop titled "Let Me Tell You A Story" will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19. Instructors from Poetry for the People will lead this workshop for children ages 6 and up.

Binjamin Wilkomirski, a child Holocaust survivor and now noted author and musician, will discuss his memoir, "Fragments: Memories of a Wartime Childhood." He will also discuss his research on the identity of Holocaust children at this lecture at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 21, at Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake Street, S.F. Suggested donation is $8.

A special run of the one-act play, "We Are Witnesses: Five Diaries of Teenagers Who Died in the Holocaust," is slated for 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday evenings, April 23 to 25, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26. Lori Shearn at age 13 left Vienna for London to live for two years with a family so she could escape the Holocaust. She'll discuss her experience in a lecture titled "The Rise of Nazism — Through A Child's Eyes" at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26.

April's events culminate with a performance, "Looking Behind the Mask," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29. Teens will explore the subjects of race relations, violence, sexuality and ancestry in this performance by the African American and Jewish Teen Theater Project of the Center for Jewish Living and Learning, part of the Jewish Federation of the Greater East Bay.
