Correspondent | April 17, 1998 New Orthodox congregation elects its first board Ahavat Yisrael, a new East Bay Orthodox congregation, has elected officers and members of its first board. President of the board is Joel Ackerman. Vice president is Phyllis Miller. Members at large are Ralph Berberich, Mort Denn and Miriam Petruck. Board meetings held each month are open for participation by all members. Services are held every Shabbat morning at 897 Colusa Ave. in Berkeley. Contra Costa JCC dinner honors community leaders Nine community leaders who helped shape the 22-year history of the Contra Costa Jewish Community Center will be honored at a 6 p.m. dinner on Saturday, April 25 at the JCC. Honorees include Hope Cohen, Barry Slavin, Phil Ross, Steven Hallert, Gordon Berke, Stanley Felix, Stuart Weinstein, Roy Kaplan and Joan Gordon. Also to be celebrated is the opening of the JCC art gallery in the center's new lobby. Tickets for the black tie-optional event are $100 per person. Israeli consul to address Holocaust service in Oakland Israeli Consul Eran Etzion will address a Yom HaShoah service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Beth Abraham, 337 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland. Three survivors, Louis de Groot, Rene Molho and Ernie Hollander, will speak by video about the end of the Holocaust and the importance of Israel to Holocaust survivors.
