I am an American Jewish woman in my early 70s. I’m a widow and have come to the conclusion that I have to maintain a healthy and active life. I am responsible for myself.

My most important priority is to go swimming daily. I spend a half hour in the water doing laps. I am a member of the Oakland Athletic Club.

Also, I volunteer at San Leandro’s Temple Beth Sholom one day a week helping with typing, mailings, etc. Also, one morning a month I volunteer at Oakland’s Home for Jewish Parents doing manicures.

The synagogue has a seniors’ group called Simcha Chait. We meet several times a month and go on field trips or listen to speakers on all subjects. I am recording secretary of the group.

I also attend the Multi-Interest Day lectures every Thursday at the synagogue.

I always look forward to attending with several of my friends the San Francisco Symphony’s senior series, and I belong to two book clubs, so reading is a big priority in my life.

I communicate with my three children and six grandchildren. I call them whenever I need their love and understanding.

My temple is my second home and I feel close to the members and rabbi and cantor. I believe in God and I know he deeply cares how I live and about my personal behavior. God gives my life direction and purpose.

Life is beautiful, but we have to work for it every day.
