Jewish holidays are the great equalizer, uniting Jews of all movements in common tradition and observance. What better equalizer could there be than the weekly observance of Shabbat?

Marking a separation from the rest of the week, Shabbat offers an opportunity to stop and appreciate the simple joys of family, friends and spirituality.

It is a day of inspiration, a time for Jews to engage in personal worship and reflection and communal prayer. It is a day for passing on Jewish knowledge, customs and traditions from generation to generation.

And it is a rare and wonderful opportunity to step away from the pressures of daily life, take a deep breath and relax. A chance to renew ourselves spiritually and prepare for the many responsibilities of the week to come.

Tonight, Jews throughout the United States will mark the third annual Shabbat Across America. The New York-based National Jewish Outreach Program sponsors the event to heighten observance of the Sabbath.

Surveys show that a large percentage of Jewish households do not mark the weekly holiday in any way. By calling attention to the virtues of Shabbat, the NJOP hopes to change that.

Shabbat Across America involves all Jewish movements. More than a dozen Bay Area congregations of all stripes will take part this year.

Knowing that so many Jews of all backgrounds will be lighting candles, drinking wine and studying Torah will give this Shabbat an added feeling of solidarity.

For some, Shabbat Across America will be the same as other Shabbats. For others, it will be a chance to learn more about customs and rituals. For first-time observers, it may even mark a new beginning.

Whatever your background, consider this Shabbat a chance to rediscover the deep and abiding value of the day of rest.
