Using Jewish texts and interactive exercises, the course will focus on rituals that occur just before and just after death, including funeral arrangements and mourning practices.

Future classes will also examine and discuss more existential and abstract questions, such as the reasons for death and belief in God.

Another goal of the courses is to eliminate existing misconceptions people may have regarding certain rituals.

For example, said Cotzin, "many people know the practice of shivah and having people in your home for seven days.

Yet, shivah often becomes the responsibility of the mourners who have to entertain guests. Instead, shivah should be focused on comforting mourners."

The hourlong classes will take place at the Cultural Center of the Jewish Home, 302 Silver Ave. Dates for classes in 2001 will be announced soon.
