The project, organized by the Volunteer Action Center of the Jewish Federation of the Greater East Bay, is called Sukkot in April because Sukkot is the major Jewish holiday that is celebrated by building and residing in a temporary shelter called a sukkah. The six projects have been organized in collaboration with the local chapters of Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April). All but one project are at private homes. It needs extensive exterior painting and yard work. Participating organizations include Congregations Beth Chaim and Beth Emek and Young Jewish Alliance of the Jewish Federation of the Greater East Bay. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The second site is a home in Pacheco. It needs extensive repair because of fire damage. Specific jobs will include renovating the kitchen, working in the yard, and painting, both inside and out. Participating organizations include Congregations B'nai Tikvah and B'nai Shalom and Temple Isaiah. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The third site is a home in Oakland. It needs extensive exterior painting, yard work, and a number of interior repairs to improve accessibility and safety. The participating organization is Temple Sinai. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The fourth site is a home in Berkeley. It needs extensive preparation for both interior and exterior painting. Participating organizations include Kehilla Community Synagogue, Temple Beth Abraham and Congregation Beth Israel. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fifth site includes two Berkeley buildings: Berkeley Youth Alternatives at 1255 Allston Way and Chaparral House at 1309 Allston Way. Both need interior painting and yard work. The participating organization is Congregation Beth El. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sixth site is a home in Berkeley. It needs interior painting and final touches. The participating organization is Congregation Netivot Shalom. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. J. Correspondent Also On J.
