Former resident of Union, N.J., she moved to Florida, where she met her husband. Later moved to Ketchum, Idaho, and Los Angeles, where she lived for the past 24 years. Slavit, Herbert Bernard In Palo Alto, March 6, after a four-year struggle with colon cancer. Age 72. Husband of Norma Slavit for 47 years. Father of Joel (and Betsy) Slavit and Lisa (and Steven) Barkin. Grandfather of Ilana Slavit, and Rachel and Joshua Barkin. Uncle of Arlene Gottstein, Lori Silverstein and George Levy. Born in the Bronx, N.Y. Graduate of Brooklyn College. Served in the U.S. Army, with his longest stint at the Presidio in San Francisco, where he played on the basketball team. Met his wife while serving in San Francisco, marrying her a year later. Moved to New Rochelle, N.Y., where he began his graduate work at Hunter College and taught at a junior high school in Manhattan. Attended U.C. Berkeley, Santa Clara University and San Jose State University for graduate work. Achieved general elementary, secondary teaching, administrative, family and child counseling, and school psychologist credentials. School teacher in Cupertino. Worked for the San Mateo Union High School District for the past 38 years, where he was the head school psychologist. Member of California Teacher’s Association, AARP and School Psychologist Association of the Bay Area. Member of Temple Emanu-El, San Jose, for 40 years. Services were held at Eternal Home Cemetery Chapel, Colma.
