Engagements

Candace Lauren Backman of San Jose, daughter of Maureen and Sandy Backman of Foster City, and Alan Scott Droutsas of San Jose, son of Cheryl Monarch of Tustin and John (and Geri) Droutsas of Point Richmond, have announced their engagement.

The bride-to-be received a bachelor’s degree in education from U.C. Riverside. She is the sister of Melanie Blackman of Foster City. Grandparents are the late Seymour Zins, the late Beverly Backman and the late Ted Backman.

Her fiancé received his bachelor’s degree in political science in U.C. Riverside. He is the brother of Brian Droutsas of Tustin. Grandparents are Shirley Gerardi of San Diego, Jane and Adrian Adams of Newhall and Louis Droutsas of El Paso, Texas.

Marissa Spritzer-Satomi of San Francisco, daughter of Hildie Spritzer and Tsutomu Satomi of Oakland, and Jeffrey Halbrecht of San Francisco, son of the late Ellen and Max Halbrecht of Elizabeth, N.J., have announced their engagement.

The bride-to-be earned a bachelor’s degree in world arts and cultures at UCLA and currently is working toward her master’s degree in education. She recently completed a year of teaching at the Brandeis Hillel Day School in San Francisco. Before that, she worked for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. She is the sister of Ariel Spritzer-Satomi. Grandparents are Suzanne Spritzer of San Mateo and the late Herman Spritzer and Takeo and Kikumi Satomi of Osaka, Japan.

Her fiancé graduated from Columbia University and New York University Medical School. He has a private practice in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine in San Francisco. He is a member of the board of the Jewish Community High School of the Bay and the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, and is active in a number of local Jewish organizations. He is the brother of Caryn (and Tommy) Haendler of Connecticut and the uncle of Jay and Alex Haendler.

The couple will be married in Sonoma on October 17 by Rabbi Shlomo Zarchi of Congregation Chevra Thilim.
