Bass, Thelma. In Burlingame, Jan. 16. Age 86. Wife of Sidney Bass, her high school sweetheart, for 63 years. Mother of Phylis Bass of San Francisco and Marvin Bass of San Mateo. Grandmother of David Elias (and Kathryn Redekop) of Oakland and Leslie Elias of San Mateo. Sister to the late Beverly Gail and Doris Kerbis. Daughter of the late Emanuel and Mary Jass. Born in Chicago on May 3, 1918. Moved to California in 1949. Resided in the Los Angeles area until 1958. Settled finally in San Mateo. Active in the PTA at her children’s public schools. Founder, past president and member of two chapters of the Children’s Asthma Research Institute and Hospital (CARIH/National Asthma Center). A dancer, a traveler and an artist. Services were held at Sinai Memorial Chapel in San Francisco with interment at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park in Colma. Fanburg, Byrdie. In San Mateo, Jan. 22. Wife of the late Harry Fanburg. Mother of Candee (and the late Steve) Weinberg and Jerry (and Sally) Fanburg. Grandmother of Ginger Weinberg and Shareen Fanburg. Private family services were held at Hills of Eternity Cemetery.

Grandmother of Steven Fox, Jody (and Brian) Blum, Jaymie (and Aryeh) Pamensky and David Gilbert. Great-grandmother to 12. Born and raised in New York City. Moved to Los Angeles in 1940. Active member of Temple Rodef Sholom and the City of Hope charity.

Great-aunt of Ronald Bent. Friend of the Veder family. Grew up in Shanghai, China. Lived most of her life in San Francisco. Lover of animals and Asian art. Sang in local operas. Active in the Far Eastern Society. Services were held at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park, 1301 El Camino Real, Colma. Donations to your preferred charity.

Rothenberg, Martin E. In Pittsburg, Jan. 18. Husband of Reva Y. Rothenberg. Brother-in-law of Sarah Ruby, Leah Yaffee, Harry Yaffee and Ruth Yaffee. Aunt and cousin to many. Born in Modesto. Received a bachelor of arts degree in economics in 1939 from the University of California, Berkeley. As an undergraduate, served as chair of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity and the Hillel Foundation Student Council. Received a law degree in 1942 from Boalt Hall. Entered into private practice in Pittsburg in 1946. Admitted to practice before the California Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of California, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. Elected to Pittsburg City Council. Served as member of the City Planning Commission and as part-time city attorney. Active in community and philanthropic organizations, including Junior Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross and Beth Israel Congregation and Congregation B’nai Shalom. First appointed to the bench of the newly created Department 7 of the Superior Court of Contra Costa County in 1959 by Gov. Edmund G. “Pat” Brown. Re-elected four times. Upon retirement continued to serve the community in different capacities. Services were held at Congregation B’nai Shalom in Walnut Creek with interment following at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette. Arrangements by Sinai Memorial Chapel.
