Cylia Akerstein In San Francisco on July 16, 2005. Beloved wife of the late Sam Akerstein; loving mother of Rosa (and Fred) Suessmann; adored grandmother of Betina (and Dr. Adam) Baumgarten and Wendy (and James) Sterling; dear sister of Mania Huberman and Hanka Jakubowicz; beloved friend for over 50 years of the Schainsinger family and dear friend to many others. Cylia was a Holocaust survivor. Services were held at Sinai Memorial Chapel with interment at Eternal Home Cemetery, Colma. Marlene Bauer Born May 9, 1929 in Bakersfield, CA. Beloved wife of Warren Bauer; mother of David (Liz), Alan (Syra) and Howard (Jan) Bauer. Cherished grandma to Audra, Jason, Adam, Daniel, Elaina, Rebecca and Ariella Bauer. Dear aunt of Beverly Paul (Mike), Marilyn Zimmerman (Dave), Leslie Martin (Bernie), Penni Stobbe (Chuck) and Skip Greene (Annette). Very close to and loved by all of the Manuela and the late Julio Guerrero Family. Daughter of the late Abraham and Rita Greenberg, sister of the late Barry Greenberg and sister-in-law of Joy Jacobs. Also survived by her dear friends of a lifetime who are also held in our hearts. A trusted and dear friend to many in the community at Temple Beth Israel-Judea. Very active in the Temple Sisterhood, Hadassah and a great support to her husband and family. Marlene (Mom) was renown for her indomitable positive spirit, always looking ahead to the next event regardless of her health or circumstances. She succumbed to pneumonia on July 15, 2005 after a valiant fight to overcome this current bout. Our family is deeply grateful to Alicia and Ophelia of Homecare Plus, the staff and facility at Magnolia Gardens, Burlingame; the Respiratory Therapy, Nursing and Emergency Departments and Medical Staff at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Redwood City and South San Francisco for their able and sensitive care while an in-patient and during her drop-in visits; and to the staff of Ralston Village, Belmont, for the very special care she had during her final days. Funeral Services were held July 18 at Temple Beth Israel-Judea and interment followed at Salem Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the American Lung Association and/or the Alzheimer’s Association.

David Gold In Millbrae on July 6, 2005, born in 1917 in San Francisco. Son of the late Mamie and Max Gold; beloved husband of the late Gertrude Gold: loving father of Robert Gold and his wife Inga Jakobovich and Steven and his wife Linda Gold; devoted grandfather of Becky, Holly and Kellyanne Gold; loved brother of Philip Gold and Alice Berger and the late Betty Garcia and Shirly Talmadge; dear brother-in-law of Mary Smith and the late Herbert Smith; dear uncle of Janeen, Garrett and Larry Smith. David attended Polytechnic High School where he enjoyed machine shop and track and field. He worked in the airplane industry in Los Angeles prior to WWII and was a WWII veteran of D-Day and Omaha Beach, serving in General Patton’s 3rdArmy until the end of the war. He owned Metropark Corp. of San Francisco and was the inventor of the self-parking pay box. David married Gertrude in 1948 and together they loved to travel and go on cruises to such places as China and Israel. He was a caring son, loving brother, devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. Funeral services were held at Eternal Home Cemetery Chapel, Colma. Contributions to Peninsula Temple Shalom, 1655 Sebastian Dr., Burlingame, CA 94010 preferred.

Leslie Anne Provence, Leah bat Avraham v’Sarah, lost her battle with metastatic melanoma on June 10, 2005 at her home in Berkeley, Calif. She was 48 years old. Born in Torrance, Calif., she obtained her bachelor of arts in molecular biology from the University of California at Santa Barbara and worked as a validation engineer for various biotech companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was a board member of Congregation Beth Israel and president of the CBI sisterhood. But, of all of her accomplishments, Leslie was proudest of her daughters Alta, Esther and Shoshana who were the light of her life. She is survived by her daughters, her husband Ken Maki and her sister Alex Moazeni. She was buried with an Orthodox Jewish service at the Home of Peace Cemetary in Oakland, Calif. on June 12, 2005. Leslie was greatly loved by her community, family and friends. She will be missed by all.
