Mary Sarah Blumberg in San Francisco on Feb. 2, 2006 at age 97. Beloved wife of the late Harry Blumberg; loving mother of Estelle (Dr. Bernard) Goldstein and Dr. Robert (Dr. Marion) Blumberg; special grandmother of David (Angela) Goldstein, Dr. Marc Blumberg and Andrew Blumberg; devoted sister of Vivian Marcus and the late Sam and Malvin Abrams and Rae Levy; beloved matriarch to many nieces, nephews and their families. A longtime active member of the San Francisco Jewish community and a resident of San Francisco for 68 years. A native of the State of Washington and a graduate of the University of Washington. Funeral services were to be held on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at Home of Peace Cemetery Chapel, Colma, with interment to follow at Salem Memorial Park. Allan Moore passed away in his sleep at his home at Magnolia of Millbrae on Feb. 2, 2006 at age 84. Devoted husband of Edith (deceased) for 60 years; father of Tania (David) Madfes and Dennis Moore (deceased); grandfather of Sasha Madfes, Michael Madfes, Nicole Moore, and Denae Moore; and great grandfather of Elyjah Wirth. Allan was a native San Franciscan, World War II veteran, past officer of Starr King Masonic Lodge #344, F.&A.M. and former president of the Northern California Sports Council. After he sold his wholesale golf equipment business he became an active volunteer with Travelers’ Aid at SFO where he gave good advice to visitors and entertained people with his stories. He also taught safe driving classes for AARP and exchanged volumes of jokes by email with family and friends around the country. Services were held at Sinai Memorial Chapel, 1501 Divisadero St. at Geary Blvd., S.F. Donations in his memory can be made to Congregation Beth Sholom, 1301 Clement St., San Francisco, CA 94118.

Dorothy Sperling Mozen of Berkeley, who courageously battled breast cancer and leukemia for 12 years, died peacefully in her home on Feb. 2, 2006. With her loving heart and kind words, she was a life force admired by all who knew her, an energetic optimist who enthusiastically embraced all aspects of her life. Dorothy actively participated in the civil rights, peace and environmental movements. In the spring of 1965, she joined Martin Luther King Jr. for the historic civil rights March to Montgomery. Dorothy was a member of Congregation Beth El in Berkeley, Calif., for 36 years, and in 2004 she proudly became an adult Bat Mitzvah. She is survived by Milton Mozen, her loving husband of 54 years, sons Eddie (Barbara) Mozen and Howard Mozen (Elizabeth Schaefer) and daughter Paula Mozen, and grandchildren, Avery Rose, Owen Milton and Isaac Patrick. Lawrence Z. Rothschild in San Francisco on Jan. 29, 2006. Beloved husband of Natalie for 45 years. Loving father of Claudia (Steve) Alm and Doug Rothschild; devoted grandfather of Jacob and Abigail; dear brother of Bill (Elaine) Rothschild; dear uncle of Jennifer (Paul) Robinson and Andrew Rothschild. Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children. He was loved and will be missed forever by all who knew him. He was a true mensch. Gisela Charlotte Strauss This loving woman passed away peacefully on Jan. 30, 2006. Born Gisela Eisenberg on Sept. 29, 1911 in Duisburg, Germany, she graduated from dental school before marrying the late Oscar Strauss in 1935. They immigrated to San Francisco in 1936, where she worked as a lab technician. In 1946 they moved to Eugene, Ore., opened a fabric store, and raised a family. They were members of Congregation Beth Israel, and she volunteered at Sacred Heart Hospital. They retired to Santa Rosa in 1979, and she joined the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Loving mother of Vivian Strauss Frye of Santa Rosa, Ron Strauss and Christina Hall-Strauss of Santa Fe, N.M., and Barbara Strauss Philleo and Jim Philleo of Fairbanks, Alaska. Beloved grandmother of Brian Frye, Michael Frye, Jaren Philleo, Crawford Philleo and dear aunt of many nieces and nephews. The family will hold a private service and a private inurnment at West Lawn Memorial Park, Eugene, Ore. Ruth Zwerling died Feb. 1, 2006 at the age of 91. She is survived by her devoted family and many friends of all ages. Ruth was the loving mother of Susan and Robert Wolfe and John Zwerling and Pat West. She was the devoted grandmother of Jeffrey Kirschenbaum and Karen Fessel, Laura and Rabbi Alan Rabishaw, Lisa and Joel Wagonfeld and Marc Wolfe. Her great-grandchildren Elana, Aaron, Jacob and Zoe were blessed by her active participation in their lives. Ruth was married to Eric Zwerling for 42 years and is survived by her brother, Abe Hoffman. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Ruth was a business graduate of New York University. After she was widowed, Ruth continued to represent Neutrogena Corporation at many dermatology conventions where she functioned as an “Ambassador of Good Will.” She was the consummate card player, but had to switch from Pan to bingo when she moved to Rhoda Goldman Plaza from Florida 4 1/2 years ago. She enjoyed her last bingo game at the Jewish Home three days before her death. Ruth crossed the country countless times so that she could be involved in activities and events that were important to her grandchildren. Her advice and opinions were freely given but always tempered with humor and love. A family funeral was held in Florida.
