Deaths

Cynthia “Cindy” Harband died at home in Tiburon on July 24, 2006 of melanoma at the age of 63. Loving daughter of Leonard Lamdan and the late Barbara Lamdan; beloved wife of Dr. Newton J. Harband; loving mother of Jeffrey (and Vida) Harband and David (and Stefany) Harband; adoring grandmother of Jared, Matthew, Olivia and Adam Harband; dear sister of Sheila (and Art) Strosberg and sister-in-law of Martin (and Carol) Harband; aunt of Darryl (and Jen) Strosberg and Mark Strosberg and Hilary and Jordan Harband.Cindy was raised in Hayward and attended Hayward High School. She graduated with distinction and entered UC Berkeley where she met her future husband, Newt. She received further education at San Jose State, majoring in education and graduating in 1964.  She was a longtime resident of Hillsborough and co-founder of Paper Caper, a fine stationery store in Burlingame. She retired from that successful business in 2002 and two years later moved to Tiburon to be closer to her children and grandchildren. She had great artistic talent and enjoyed doing art projects with her grandchildren. Cindy enjoyed gardening and had a knack for growing beautiful orchids. She also enjoyed the San Francisco Symphony and foreign travel. Cindy loved her vacation home in Tahoe in both winter and summer. She was a member of the Jewish Community Federation, Peninsula Temple Sholom and many other Jewish organizations. She supported her favorite teams, the Cal Bears football team and the SF Giants with Newt.  Private graveside services were held. A memorial service was held at Congregation Kol Shofar, 215 Blackfield Dr., Tiburon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Cindy be made to the Jewish Community Federation or the Stanford Cancer Council Fund (Http://givingto stanford.stanford.edu).

Joseph S. Lerner, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 19, 2006. He was the beloved husband of Shirley, beloved father of Leslie, Ken (Laurie), and Carol Lerner; beloved grandfather of Aaron, Daniel, Jeremy and Jamie; beloved uncle of Marcia (Ricardo) Hofer, Stephen (Harriet) Lerner, Jonny Lerner, Higgy (Renee) Lerner and David (Leslie) Friedman, and beloved brother-in-law of Kathleen Lerner, Rosalie Lerner and Frances Levitov; beloved great-uncle of Jennifer and Amy Hofer, Matt Lerner (Jo Saltmarsh) and Ben (Ari Mangual) Lerner, and Anjelica and Anthony Lerner. Dr. Lerner retired from a rewarding career as a professor and head of the special education department and chairman of the doctoral program at San Francisco State University. He mentored teachers to work with special education students. His career spanned 42 years of work in education. He was active co-president of the Peninsula Temple Beth El Senior Friendship Club, volunteering in the temple library and member of Israel Havurah. Memorial services will be held on August 4, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Peninsula Temple Beth El, San Mateo.

Lily Liffmann on July 20, 2006 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Beloved wife of the late Richard Liffmann; loving mother of Michael (Robin), Henry (Anne), and Rochelle Kolman(Joseph). Grandmother of Ian, Chad, Grant, Renee and Jason Liffmann, and Mark Kolman. Funeral Services were held in Zimbabwe. Contributions may be made to Jewish Family & Children’s Services Peninsula Youth Programs or Peninsula Temple Sholom, Burlingame.
