Gerda Lakatos In San Francisco on September 26, 2009, at age 90, passed peacefully with her family by her side. Loving wife of the late Otto Lakatos, loving mother of Richard, Charles (Susan) and Jerry (Kathy); adoring grandmother of Jenny, Jeff and Kyle Lakatos.
Gerda was born 1919 in Vienna. She survived the Holocaust but tragically lost all of her immediate family. In Nice, France after the war she met fellow Viennese survivors, which included her soon-to-be husband, Otto Lakatos. They traveled to Australia to be with Otto’s family before immigrating to the USA, settling in San Francisco in 1951. Gerda was a wonderful cook & baker. She made great traditional Viennese dishes and desserts, which were legendary among family & friends.
As a seamstress, Gerda had great skill creating and altering clothing. After Otto passed 1971 she began working fulltime fitting corsets and prosthetics at Hittenburger’s for several years before retiring.
Gerda’s passion was her family and friends. Even with such great losses on life’s path she always had great strength and pride to carry on. She leaves us a wonderful legacy. Gerda’s last few years were spent at the Irene Swindell Residential Alzheimer’s Care Program. We are most grateful to all the staff for their kindness and outstanding care they gave “momma” Gerda.
Private inurnment services were held under the direction of Sinai Memorial Chapel.
Donations to CPMC Foundation, Irene Swindell Center, 1255 Post Street, Ste. 700, SF/CA 94109, phone: (415) 600-4403, preferred.
