Jo Anne Levy, 1931-2009

JoAnne Levy died of lung cancer at home on October 29, 2009 at the age of 78. She was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Born in San Francisco May 19, 1931, JoAnne was the daughter of Anne Smolensky and Dr. Samuel Donig and stepdaughter of Samuel Jermane. She was raised in San Francisco and Fairfax, California, and Weiser, Idaho. She attended the University of California, Berkeley and was a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority.

JoAnne is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jesse M. Levy, and three daughters: Robin Anne Levy of Palo Alto, Janet M. Levy of Palo Alto and Gayle A. Levy of Kansas City, Mo.

She volunteered for Marin County Suicide Prevention, was a founding member of the Children’s Theatre of the National Council of Jewish Women, served as President of the Sisterhood of Congregation Emanu-El and was a member of the Board of Jewish Family and Children’s Services. Most recently she served as Chairman of the Elizabeth & Alvin Fine Museum and was an active member of the Theta Delta Xi charitable sorority.

JoAnne was the mother-in-law of Warren Belter, Richard H. Schwartz and Whitney S. Terrell and adoring grandmother of Daniel E. Schwartz, Alana B. Schwartz and Morrison L. Terrell.

She will be missed by those who shared her love of bridge, travel and standard poodles.

The family is grateful for the support of Sutter VNA Hospice and the Seniors- at- Home Program of the Jewish Family and Children’s Services. Donations appreciated to the Fine Museum of Congregation Emanu-El or the Levy Family Fund at Jewish Family and Children’s Services. A memorial service will be held at Congregation Emanu-El, Arguello Blvd and Lake Streets on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m. A reception will follow services.

Arline Lipman

In Daly City on October 29th 2009 at age 89 years.

Beloved wife of the late George Morris Lipman Jr., who passed in 1998; loving mother of George Lipman III, John R. (Terry Kirschner) Lipman and Diane (William) Baxter; aunt of Julie Bernard. Also survived by many other loving relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by all.

Services were held on Thursday, Nov. 5 at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park, in Colma. Contributions to your favorite charity are preferred.

Jacquelyn Rosekind

Beloved daughter of the late Jack and Anne Rosekind; loving sister of Barbara Berel and Sylvia Solomon; devoted sister-in-law of Marilyn Rosekind and Dr. Bertram Solomon; dear aunt of Karan Scheikowitz, Mindy Zych, Roger Solomon, Ted Solomon, Ken Berel, Mark Rosekind, Marcha Myal and Stephanie Rosekind.

Funeral Services were held Nov. 4 at Colma, CA.

Harry Jacob Thalheimer

In San Carlos, October 26, 2009 at the age of 87. Beloved husband for 45 years to Ursula Thalheimer, who passed away on February 7, 2001. Loving father to Judy Thalheimer and father-in-law to Brian Kirshner. Proud grandfather to Jeremy and Jessica Kirshner. A devoted uncle.

Harry was born in Darmstadt, Germany. A Holocaust survivor, Harry and his family immigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco, where Harry lived until 2002. Harry and Ursula together owned and operated a successful restaurant in San Francisco for many years. Harry was a past president of B’nai B’rith San Francisco Lodge No. 21 and of the Jewish War Veterans. After his retirement, he volunteered in a local school in the Sunset District until he lost his sight.

Harry was an intelligent, kind and courageous man with a wonderful sense of humor who will be missed by his family and friends and all whose lives he touched.

Memorial Service to be held on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2:30 p.m. at Peninsula Temple Beth El in San Mateo.
