Shulamit Shamir, the wife of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, died July 29 in Tel Aviv. She was 88. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement of condolence to her family.
Shulamit was born in Bulgaria in 1923. She was arrested upon arrival in pre-state Israel due to a limitation on Jewish immigration, and was sent to a detention camp. There she met Yitzhak, held for his activities in a Jewish underground group. They married in 1944.
Shulamit, who was a fighter in the pre-state underground group Lehi, is survived by her husband, Yitzhak, 95, two children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Yitzhak Shamir served as prime minister from 1983-84 and again between 1986-1992. — ap & jta
