Correspondent | August 5, 2011 Jewish Family and Children Services’ of San Francisco is seeking volunteers for its Seniors At Home program — a palliative and end of life care service. Volunteers must undergo a comprehensive 30-hour training program beginning Oct. 25 at the JFCS San Francisco office at 2150 Post St. Each participant will be matched with a local client who is in need of support, assistance or simply companionship. Prior medical or hospice experience is not necessary. Palliative care is provided to help people through any type of suffering associated with an illness, a medical treatment or an end-of-life situation. Volunteers help provide respite for family members, by assisting with errands and tasks or by simply being there. Also called the Friendly Visitor Program, it needs volunteers go get together with seniors for various activities, such as walks, going to a farmers market, sharing lunch of coffee, or simply conversation.
