London riots spread to Jewish areas

Stores in the London Jewish communities of Stamford Hill and Golders Green were urged to close and secure merchandise this week as rioting that began Aug. 6 in the north London neighborhood of Tottenham began spreading.

In addition, people were advised not to walk alone and to be careful when going to synagogue, according to reports. No synagogues have been reported damaged, though some Jewish-owned stores reportedly have been ransacked. At least two stabbings were reported Aug. 8 in Stamford Hill.

The Guardian newspaper reported that some members of Tottenham’s small Chassidic community — a once-substantial community that earned its local soccer team the nickname “the Yids” — gathered to jeer police. A video posted on YouTube shows Orthodox men laughing and then scattering as a crowd of mounted police officers moves in. The rioting began Aug. 6 following the shooting of an alleged drug dealer, Mark Duggan. — jta
