Oakland Hebrew Day School has raised $1 million in 10 months to match a grant from an anonymous donor, school officials announced this week.
The $2 million will be used to provide needs-based scholarships for students to attend the Modern Orthodox day school in the Oakland hills, officials said in an Oct. 3 press release.
The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, also pledged another $100,000 for the school, which is marking its 20th anniversary this year, to find new donors by Dec. 31. If that grant is matched, that money will be used to support the school’s long-term scholarship funds, officials said.
“We were awed by the commitments, many over two to three years, by our donors,” Dan Cohen, OHDS board president, said in a statement. “By raising these funds, and combining them with our endowed funds, our legacy commitments and our annual fundraising, we are one step closer to sustaining our school for decades to come.”
Rabbi Yehudah Potok, the head of school, said donations ranged from $15 to $100,000 and came “from every part of our community.” — jta
