Byron Earl Eisenberg
Died peacefully on his 94th birthday. Born, married and passed away on Nov. 20. Dearly beloved husband of Doretta Eisenberg for 73 years; devoted father of Susan Weiner and the late Claire Hein; father-in-law of Jared Hein and Stephen Weiner; cherished grandfather of Michael (Annette) and Lisa Weiner, Philip and Melissa Hein, and Jennifer Buckley; great-grandfather of Matthew, Joshua and Scott Weiner and Michaela Buckley; brother of Howard Eisenberg and the late Walter Eisenberg; brother-in-law of Marian and the late David Goldeen, the late Zelda Eisenberg, and the late Elaine Eisenberg.
Born in San Francisco and attended Lowell High School and U.C. Berkeley, where he was a Pi Lambda Phi. He left Cal to found Byron’s Shoes and for over 60 years his life focused on the shoe business in the Mission District, downtown San Mateo, and the Stonestown, Tanforan and Stanford shopping centers. His customers became his friends and family and they patronized Byron’s Shoes from generation to generation.
He was a longtime season ticket holder and avid fan of the Giants and 49ers and was thrilled when the Giants won their first World Series. He was also a fine bridge player.
He enjoyed his grandchildren and watched with pride as they grew up and later brought him four great-grandchildren.
We are thankful for the loving support and care of his caregivers: Lilly, Larnie, Sarah and Christina. Private services have been held. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Bernice Glickfeld
May 8, 1919–Nov. 23, 2011
In San Rafael at age 92. She was the beloved wife of the late Bernard “Billy” Glickfeld; loving mother of Martin Glickfeld and Maggie (Brian) Sedar; adored grandmother of Martine and Andy Glickfeld and Tate and Frankie Sedar, and “Aunt Bea” to her many nieces and nephews.
Bernice grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, the seventh of eight children of Frank and Minnie Salasky. She never lost her honeyed accent or her Southern charm. She was a true lady. Her first husband was killed in World War II, and after the loss of her beloved mother, she came west with her “baby brother” Leonard. In 1954, she married Bernard Glickfeld of San Francisco, who was named to the Superior Court bench in the 1960s.
She was a loving and supportive wife, a devoted mother and grandmother and a loyal friend who embraced all that she pursued actively and independently. Hers was truly a life of commitment and service to the Jewish community, her family, and friends. No need was too great or too small to escape her attention.
Bernice worked with and served on the boards of many organizations. She was particularly proud to serve on the board of the National Council of Jewish Women and was honored as its “Woman of the Year.” She also served on the board of Temple Emanu-El.
Vivacious, strong and energetic, Bernice was involved in countless programs and devoted to Jewish family life and traditions. She will forever be remembered for the unique style that was all her own. She was happiest and at her best when helping others, and she will be missed not only by her family but by the many whose lives she touched so lovingly.
Funeral services were held Nov. 27, 2011 at Sinai Memorial Chapel, San Francisco, followed by interment at the Home of Peace Cemetery, Colma.

Kay Stewart
Kay Stewart died peacefully at home with her son Philip at her side on Nov. 19, 2011. She was 93 years young. Born in May 1918 in Portland, Oregon, she survived the flu pandemic when she was three months old and lived life to the fullest (!!!) ever since. A fantastic mom, a wonderful cook (especially her cookies), world traveler, Harley rider, hot-air balloon adventurer (twice), great friend to everyone of all ages, rays (not just one!) of sunshine and optimism wherever she went, a great conversationalist and an avid reader with a thirst for learning until the day she died.
She will be cremated and her ashes scattered where her late husband Alan’s were, in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills. A celebration of her life will be held at the end of January. A donation to the charity of your choice would be wonderful. If you’d like, email Philip at [email protected]. Thank you.
