“Out of Cordoba,” a documentary film about Jewish-Muslim relations past and present, will screen March 24 at Or Shalom Jewish Community in San Francisco.

Directed by Jacob Bender, who will be at the screening, the film explores the lives of two 12th-century philosophers from the Spanish city of Cordoba — the Muslim Averroes and the Jewish sage Moses Maimonides, each of whom influenced the other.

“Out of Cordoba” asks the question: Are Jews and Muslims eternal enemies, incapable of peaceful coexistence? Those interviewed include a Spanish Muslim cleric who declares a fatwa against Osama bin Laden after an al-Qaeda attack in Madrid; a Jewish physician in Morocco; Egyptian human rights activists; and a rabbi in Israel who defends Palestinian homes against demolition by the Israeli army.

The film also captures the personal journey of director Bender, an American Jew and peace activist who travels around Spain, Morocco, France, Egypt, Israel and the Palestinian territories in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

The event is sponsored by a number of religious and interfaith groups and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
