Outside the box

What happens when an Israeli klezmer clarinetist and a punk rock drummer form a band? They go on to form a bigger one. Ori Kaplan and Tamir Muskat started playing together as Balkan Beat Box in 2004, soon adding in Jamaican dub step, funk, Gypsy folk, electronica and other genres to their eclectic fusion band, along with a half-dozen musicians. Balkan Beat Box attracted an international following and next week will perform on one of San Francisco’s famous stages: the Fillmore.
