BJE to fete school educators, students

The S.F.-based Bureau of Jewish Education will honor the students, teachers and coordinators who participated in BASIS, an Israel education program in local Jewish day schools, during its annual celebration June 3.

Eleven Bay Area Jewish day schools took part in BASIS (Bay Area Schools Israel Synergy), a four-year initiative funded by the Jim Joseph Foundation. The now-concluded program helped schools design new Israel curricula, twinned local schools with Israeli counterparts and brought Israeli culture into the classroom.

“Studies indicate young American Jews are less engaged with Israel,” said David Waksberg, BJE’s executive director, “and we felt educationally we could help them connect with Israel in new ways.”

Funding for BASIS has now ended, but Waksberg said the BJE will “work with the schools to sustain the gains going forward.”

The June 3 celebration is set for 4 p.m. at the JCC of San Francisco. Israeli singer Lior Ben-Hur will perform. For information, visit www.bjesf.org or call (415) 751-6983.
