Every year, one in three adults over age 65 falls, an accident that can threaten the senior’s ability to live independently. In hopes of improving this statistic, the Jewish Family and Children’s Services of the East Bay offers thorough home assessments to identify potential health hazards.

Some common recommendations are to:

• install night lights;

• keep walkways as clear as possible;

• make sure armchairs and couches are easy to get into and out of;

• make sure cords of all kinds are hidden or tacked down.

JFCS also suggests seniors can stay safer by exercising on a regular basis, watching their diets and making sure they are well-nourished, scheduling routine eye and ear exams, and wearing well-fitting shoes with rubber soles and low heels.

To schedule an in-home assessment with JFCS/East Bay, call (510) 558-7800 or email [email protected].  A sliding scale is available.
