In Memory of Zena Fish

Surrounded by her loving family, Zena Fish (nee Abers) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday evening, November 18, after a valiant fight against cancer. Born in Los Angeles, Zena spent most of her life in San Francisco, attending Lowell High School where she was the editor of the school newspaper. She graduated from University of California, Berkeley, where she pledged Alpha Epsilon Phi. With her devoted husband, Leon, they raised three daughters in Marin County. Zena, a tireless volunteer, worked for the local school board, the Marin Civic Ballet and the City of Hope, among others. Zena then began a new immensely satisfying career as a paralegal.

Zena was an avid golfer and an active member of Lake Merced Golf and Country Club, serving as captain of the Ladies Golf Association. Zena, never without a book at her side, shared her love of reading by mentoring children through the Peninsula Jewish Coalition for Literacy. In recent years, Zena and Leon spent much of their time at The Lakes in Palm Desert, California, where they indulged their passion for golf, the arts, many charitable causes and their dear friends and family. Zena’s effervescent spirit, energy for life and warm giving heart will be deeply missed by the many, many people whose lives she touched.

Zena is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Leon, her daughters Renee (and Barry) Gordon, Barbara (and Michael) Shenson, Andrea (and Patrick) Bradley, seven wonderful grandchildren whom she adored, Brett, Alex, Jessica, Danielle, Nicholas, Connor and Nora, and her sister Lynn (and Robert) Miller.

Burial was Nov. 27 at Home of Peace Cemetery in Colma, with services at Peninsula Temple Sholom in Burlingame, followed by a celebration of Zena’s life. The family prefers contributions made in Zena’s memory to the Mills Peninsula Hospital Foundation, 1501 Trousdale Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010.
