American Jewish World Service is phasing out some of its service programs in 2013 and 2014, among them Volunteer Corps.
Since its inception in 1994, the program has placed hundreds of volunteers with AJWS partners in Africa, Asia and the Americas. The corps uses experienced professionals, including retirees, to work with those in underdeveloped nations.
According to AJWS, phasing out the program will allow the nonprofit to increase its focus on U.S.-based programs that advocate for global justice. New service programs will be launched in the fall of 2013.
Volunteer Corps cohorts were deployed in January as planned to India, Thailand and Cambodia, and individual volunteers confirmed to deploy to East Africa on or before May will complete their assignments, according to the nonprofit.
