Almost five years to the day after her adult bat mitzvah, Doris Sperber once again marked a special day with family, friends and fellow congregants at Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco.

It was her 105th birthday. But who’s counting?

Around 80 people, including some 25 family members, attended the celebratory oneg on Jan. 26. Among the partiers was Sperber’s 9-month-old great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Roge, of Marblehead, Mass., whom Sperber had not met before.

A longtime member of Sherith Israel, Sperber lives at the Jewish Home in San Francisco. Steve Sperber — one of four sons — said his mom enjoyed a full day of activities, beginning with services at 10:30 a.m. “She’s doing amazingly well,” he said.

In an interview before her bat mitzvah at age 100, Sperber told j. she was “scared stiff,” but said she’d always dreamed of having the rite of passage. Reared in an Orthodox family in New York City, Sperber said, “As a girl growing up in Brooklyn, I went to Hebrew school, but I could not have a bat mitzvah ceremony. That honor was afforded only to boys.” — liz harris
