NFL team signs Jewish punter from East Bay

Andrew Shapiro, a 2008 graduate of Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans this month. He will try to make the NFL team as a punter in training camp this summer.

Shapiro, 22, attended Fresno State and had a solid career with the Bulldogs. A few months ago, he was selected by Jewish Sports Review as the sole punter on its 2012 college football all-America team. However, he was not selected during the seven-round NFL draft in April; the Texans signed him on May 10.

As a senior last season, Shapiro averaged 42.0 yards per punt and was named to the 2012 Mountain West Conference’s all-academic team. His longest punt of the season was 56 yards.

According to Murray Farber, president of the Jewish Federation of the Central Valley, Shapiro attended Friday night and holiday services at Temple Beth Israel in Fresno, and also assisted with Sunday school classes. n
