Chabad of Marin out of fiscal danger

At the start of the year, Chabad of Marin faced imminent foreclosure, with $50,000 in back mortgage and tax payments weighing the institution down. Thanks to concerted outreach, the organization has restructured its bank loan and faces no imminent fiscal threat, according to Rabbi Yisrael Rice.

Rabbi Yisrael Rice

“There was a beautiful outpouring of concern and assistance,” Rice said. “It was so uplifting. You always want to be in a situation when you’re helping to lift up someone else, but sometimes you need a hand, and I’m blessed to have seen the Jewish people rise to the challenge.”

Since 1988, Chabad of Marin has been located at 1150 Idylberry Road in San Rafael. It also serves as Rice’s residence. He told j. in January that a weak economy hurt the institution and caused him to fall behind on payments.

The center houses a preschool, adult education classes and Torah study, as well as Shabbat and holiday observances, including for the High Holy Days. It also has a mikvah.

Rice says the need for ongoing funding has not gone away, though the earlier fiscal emergency has passed.

“We went through a crisis,” Rice said, “but I always felt I had to stay clearly focused on my mission and purpose, which is to reach the Jewish people and assist their connection to Judaism.”
