Tehiyah students will travel the globe during a year-long study of multiculturalism. Through art, music, literature, food and movement they will visit Bali, Mexico, Africa, Spain, and Israel. Exploring textiles and artifacts from each country’s unique history and culture will surely inspire the children’s creativity and self expression.
Art projects include Kente and Adrinka cloth printing from Ghana; tin metal wind chimes from Bali; painted Mexican tiles and self-portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo; Hamsa art and papercuts from Israel; woven baskets, animal carvings, and still life drawings based on geometric designs from African sculpture; wooden houses designed from Antoni Gaudi’s buildings in Spain; paintings of water life in the tradition of Mithila art from the river Ganga by Rambharos Jha; collage and applique Toran Fringe hangings from India; quilts from the African-American women’s collective in the isolated hamlet of Gee’s Bend, Alabama; as well as multicultural puppets, toys and sewn dolls with ethnic clothing. This spring they will celebrate their learning at Tehiyah’s International Folk Festival, featuring Latin American cuisine and student performances of salsa, cha-cha and merengue.
