Carmela Landes

Jan. 27, 1956–Oct. 19, 2013

Carmi passed away surrounded by her family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by the loves of her life — her children Hannah and Michael, and by her mother Rachel and her siblings Elliot (spouse Linda Glick), Jonathan (partner Mimi Warnecke) and Rebecca (spouse Ben Rose), and by loving extended family.

Born in Oakland, Calif., Carmi lived in New York City where she practiced internal medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center. She loved to travel, to sing, and to watch her children perform with the Metropolitan Opera and the Trinity Wall Street Youth Choir. Her California family is so grateful to family and friends in NYC who surrounded her with love and support during her illness. She was an extraordinary woman who taught us volumes about life and resiliency. Services were held on Oct. 22 at Home of Peace Cemetery in Oakland. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Jewish World Service.

Leonard Raznick

May 9, 1961–Oct. 1, 2013

Much too soon, Leonard Raznick died after a prolonged and courageous fight against cancer. Born in Ann Arbor, Mich., Leonard moved with his family to San Francisco at the age of 3. From youth through adulthood, Leonard was active in many social justice causes, dedicating his life for tikkun olam.

After graduation from college, Leonard taught at Hoover Middle School and City College in San Francisco for over 20 years. He will be deeply missed by his many colleagues, students, friends and family.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Laura Retzlaff, children Nate, Pete and Julia, his mother, Janet Raznick, brother Eric, sister-in-law Tracey Irwin, and nephews Josh and Alex.

A celebration of Leonard’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 27 at Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake St., San Francisco.

The world was a better place when he was here.

Lorraine (Siegel) Rosenthal

Leah bat Ya-acov Siegel, born at Mount Zion Hospital on Sept. 19, 1951 in San Francisco, Calif., passed away Oct. 15, 2013. Survived by her loving and devoted husband, Rudy Rosenthal, her sisters Annette Montgomery and Eleanor Pechner, her children Regina and Judah Glass and grandchildren Kyle Alec Tillisch, Clifford Jacob Glass and Kaylee Naava Glass.

Lorraine grew up in Daly City and referred to the Bay Area and the Pacific Ocean as her backyard and the East Bay and surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains as her favorite place to vacation. She said she had lived a full and fulfilled life. Her favorite memories were those spent with family on visits to Lake Anza and nearby beaches, camping trips, roller skating, bicycling and gardening. Donations can be made in Lorraine’s memory to the American Cancer Society or Coming Home Hospice at CPMC.

Susan Rubins

Our dear relative, Susan, passed away peacefully on Oct. 8, 2013. Susan was a kind, caring person who enjoyed travel, dining out and reading, among other interests. She left behind a younger sister, Elaine, her wonderful Aunt Dorothy and many cousins. Susan was happily married for 30 years to Leonard, who died in 2000. They enjoyed living in Israel for many years. Susan also lived in Florida.

Yukiko Ichimura Sorrell

In San Francisco on Oct. 17, 2013, at age 94. Beloved wife of the late Isaiah Sorrell (Shaike Sczwawinowicz); loving mother of Leila (Ezra) Van Gelder and Dr. Arthur Sorrell; adoring grandmother of Shai, Yoshi and David Van Gelder.

Yuki was born in Japan. She met her husband, a Polish Holocaust survivor, in post–World War II Japan and immigrated with him to the United States where they started a new life together. His life was tragically cut short and she was widowed in 1968. As a single mother she raised her two children to have a deep love and understanding of Judaism and the Japanese culture. Yukiko was a dedicated artist and teacher, beloved and remembered by her former students. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Services were held Oct. 20, 2013 at Sinai Memorial Chapel, San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Institute on Aging, 3575 Geary Blvd., S.F., 94118 or Kimochi, 1715 Buchanan St., S.F., 94115 would be kindly appreciated.

Gerald Weiner

Gerald Howard Weiner, 73, of Hillsborough, Calif., passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013 at Mills-Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, Calif. Born in San Francisco to Jack and Lillian Weiner, he lived most of his life in San Francisco and Hillsborough.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Judith, of 47 years, son Jon Weiner, daughter Kimberly (Matthew) Stern, daughter Jill Weiner, and grandchildren Lilly, Mason and Zachary. He is also survived by his sister Gail Hirsch, as well as his many loving cousins and friends.

Gerald was an extremely loving and passionate man who enjoyed electronics, antique fans and motors, working with his hands, real estate, good food and music, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Services were held at Home of Peace Cemetery on Oct 17. Burial followed at Salem Memorial Park.
