Leon Rosenthal

Longtime Bay Area resident Leon Rosenthal, 87, died peacefully at his home after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He spent most of his career in the retail furniture business, most notably as President of W&J Sloane. Later he had a second career as an investment manager for the Wornick Company.

But he will be most remembered for all the lives he touched and the people he helped, from his involvement in charitable organizations such as the Jewish Vocational Service and the Human Investment Project to his personal interactions with and genuine interest in virtually everyone he met. He liked to call himself a “semi-professional matchmaker,” and he did have a few successes in that area.

Leon was born and raised in Baltimore. He attended Johns Hopkins University with the intention of becoming a pharmacist. Work opportunities led him in other directions, however, and took Leon and his family across the country twice, eventually landing them in the Bay Area for good.

Leon is survived by Edith, his devoted wife of 60 years, his brother Julius and Julius’ wife Irene of Baltimore, his son Michael and Michael’s wife Marleen Roggow of Marin County, his daughter Betsy and Betsy’s husband David Rosenthal of Los Angeles and grandchildren Adam, Sara and Joel.

Service were held Nov. 12 at Skylawn Cemetery in San Mateo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Jewish Vocational Service in San Francisco, Human Investment Project Housing in San Mateo or the Parkinson’s Institute and Clinical Center in Sunnyvale.
