The S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation is continuing its drive to raise money for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines by hosting a benefit film screening on Monday, Dec. 9 in Burlingame.
“Rescue in the Philippines,” a documentary about how the Philippines courageously accepted 1,200 Jewish refugees during the Holocaust, will be shown at 7 p.m. at Peninsula Temple Sholom, 1655 Sebastian Drive, Burlingame.
The free screening will be followed by opportunities to support the federation’s Typhoon Haiyan Emergency Fund, which had raised more than $55,000 as of this week, according to a federation official. All funds collected will go to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and IsraAid for emergency relief and long-term recovery.
Peninsula Temple Sholom is a co-sponsor of the screening, and the S.F.-based Jewish Community Relations Council is a partner.
The 56-minute film is about the Frieder brothers, five Cincinnati businessmen who made cigars in pre–World War II Manila. They used their influence with Philippines president Manuel Quezon to help save European Jews from 1938 to 1941.
