After doubling its recipients to 10 this year, the Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards will again increase the number of grants it hands out in 2014.
Bay Area philanthropist Helen Diller has expanded the program to 15 recipients — five from California and another 10 from across the country. Each altruistic winner will receive a $36,000 grant to use as he or she wishes, either to expand philanthropic work or further education.
Now in its eighth year, the program recognizes Jewish teens for spearheading volunteer service projects that are making a difference locally, nationally or globally. Since its inception, 40 Jewish teens have been recognized with nearly $1.5 million in grants.
Teens 13 through 19 can be nominated by any community member, or can nominate themselves, through Jan. 19. As a side perk, the Helen Diller Family Foundation will make three $360 donations to randomly selected nominators for the nonprofit of their choice.
