The Peninsula JCC in Foster City will host a free afternoon of talks by Jewish science writers on Feb. 8.

The writers, all with books published in 2014, include Arthur Allen, who penned “The Fantastic Laboratory of Dr. Weigl: How Two Brave Scientists Battled Typhus and Sabotaged the Nazis,” Stuart Rojstaczer, Palo Alto–based author of the novel “The Mathematician’s Shiva,” Noah J. Efron, who wrote “A Chosen Calling: Jews in Science in the Twentieth Century,” and Daniel Feldman and Lee Daniel Kravetz, authors of “Supersurvivors: The Surprising Link Between Suffering and Success.”

The literary event is part of the JCC’s series on Jewish innovation, “Then There Was Light: Jewish Contributions to Advancements in Science, Medicine and Technology,” featuring exhibits, lectures and other events through March 23.

On Thursday, Feb. 5, Anthony Goldbloom, founder and CEO of Kaggle.com, will speak about data prediction in a salon called “Can Data Science Really Do That?” On Feb. 8, concurrent with the authors event, children in kindergarten through fifth grade can attend a workshop for young inventors.

Television actress Mayim Bialik, who holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience, will speak on Feb. 22 about encouraging girls to enter the sciences; on Feb. 28, Ed Metzger will star in the one-man play “Einstein: The Practical Bohemian.”

The writers event will start at 12:30 p.m. with a book fair hosted by Books Inc. and author talks will run until 5 p.m. The JCC is located at 800 Foster City Blvd. For more information, visit www.pjcc.org/innovation. — drew himmelstein
