For the second year in a row, Berkeley-based Tikkun magazine has received a high-level honor from the Religion Newswriters Association.

At the RNA banquet this summer in Philadelphia, Tikkun was awarded first place for overall religion coverage by a magazine. The award was for Tikkun’s quarterly print edition, not its online version.

In a press release, Tikkun attributed the win to “the high quality of writing and deep thinking in articles in the past year,” citing examples such as “The Spiritual Dimension of Social Justice: Transforming the Legal Arena,” “An LGBTQ Reading of Torah” and “Dharma and Ahimsa: A Hindu Take on Environmental Stewardship.”

The press release noted that Tikkun “covers religion issues” as opposed to “major magazines in the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu worlds, as well as secular magazines, which cover religion stories.”

Published since 1986, Tikkun is politically progressive with a broadly defined spiritual bent. Tikkun means “repair” and the magazine’s slogan is “to heal, repair and transform the world.” Founder and editor-in-chief Rabbi Michael Lerner also leads Beyt Tikkun, a Renewal synagogue in Berkeley.

RNA is an association for people who cover religion in the news media.
