With the vegan lifestyle gaining momentum over the last few years in Israel, many restaurants have decided to include vegan options. But choices remain limited, leading to some restaurants taking advantage and charging exorbitant prices for vegan dishes.
One example of this occurred last week, when the restaurant Zakaim in downtown Tel Aviv launched a new dish, a “bread steak” salad, and was charging approximately $10.15 for it. The “steak” is actually slices of bread; they are served on a bed of aioli with Romaine lettuce leaves.
Zakaim posted details of its new dish on Facebook, which provoked a storm of responses from users.
“Can I have my steak rare? I really feel like a lump of dough,” quipped one Facebook user. “Does it matter which part of the loaf the bread comes from?” asked another.
Hila Zakaim, one of the owners, explained why the dish is so expensive. “If I were to cut the bread and salad into little pieces, mix in the aioli and call it a Caesar salad, no one would call [the price] over-the-top,” she said. “We wanted to put a fresh spin on a Caesar salad,” she added. — ynetnews.com
