Leila (Lee) Blumenfeld – January 10, 2016

Our beloved Lee was a gitte n’shuma. She was a woman of great dignity, generosity and warmth. These qualities, as well as her gift of listening without judging made her the confidante of many.

Lee was born in San Francisco to Ida and Abe Curilow on February 26, 1923, in the Mission District. The family later moved to the Richmond District, where she attended Washington High School. She worked in her father’s coat factory just south of Market Street. It was there, at the age of 18 that she met her future husband, Jerry Blumenfeld. Jerry was 20 and accompanying his mother on a buying trip for the family’s East Bay department store, Blumenfeld’s, in Richmond. Jerry and Lee married in 1941. She accompanied her enlisted husband to Oklahoma, but shortly after becoming pregnant, she returned to the Bay Area. After serving in the European theater during World War II, Jerry joined Lee and his now 2-year-old son, Jeff, and settled in Richmond. Soon after, another son, Joel, was born. Lee was an active partner in Jerry’s business ventures. Her vision of better fashion options for large women was realized by their opening of Jerry B’s clothing stores.

Jerry and Lee provided a model of a rich and successful 68-year marriage. Jerry died seven years ago, and Lee felt the lack of his presence every day after his death.

Lee was a devoted mother and grandmother, helping to raise her grandchildren, Gayle, Jason, Jonah and Miriam. We were so lucky to be able to have her participate in such a deep way in their upbringing. The children had the privilege of her care and interest as they became adults. Ever generous of love, she even was ‘Grandma Lee’ to a number of their friends. She truly treasured being a great-grandmother to Gayle’s sons, Will and Ben, and Jason’s boy, Jake. Lee also was a wonderful mother (and grandmother)-in-law to Louise, Gayle and Jason’s mother; Rochelle, Jonah and Miriam’s mother; Bonnie, Jeff’s wife; Jim, Gayle’s husband; and Leyla, Jason’s wife.

Her smiling and gentle presence will be missed by all of us.

Donations in Lee’s memory can be made to Congregation Beth Hillel (she was among its founding members), the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or a charity of your choice.

Dr. Edwin Paul Goodman, 78 years of age, of Walnut Creek, California, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2016 surrounded by his family.

Ed was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 6, 1937. He grew up knowing the sights and sounds of Brooklyn and Manhattan. He graduated from Brooklyn College and NYU College of Dentistry. He made the rank of Captain in the Army as a dentist and headed west to San Francisco to look for a career and future.

Ed was introduced to the love of his life, Julie Goodman; they were married on August 24, 1969, and shared 46 wonderful years of marriage in the Bay Area.

Ed worked hard as a dentist for over 30 years, helping raise his four children and always sharing his unique view of the world. He enjoyed retirement at Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, discussing current events, talking to his neighbors, attending the community synagogue and trying every art class available, especially painting. He never missed a chance to travel (even though he hated flying) and to spend time with his family. He would always remind his children and wife that he was a happy man, and that he had, as Sinatra sang, “done it my way.”

Ed was a Brooklyn native at heart, and always loved traveling to New York City. His last trip was to New York, and he will be returning to rest in the place where he grew up. He enjoyed black and white cookies, Mrs. Stahl’s knishes and cheesecake from Junior’s. Ed will be laid to rest near his parents and family at New Montefiore Cemetery in Pine Lawn, New York.

Ed is survived by his wife, Julie Goodman; his children, Aaron, Brian, Laura, and Roger and their spouses; his grandchildren, Hannah, Noah, Zoe, Emma, Simon and Gus; and his sister-in-law, Jeannette, brothers-in-law, Peter and Louis; his nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.

Ed is preceded in death by his sister, Rhoda Rabinowitz, and his parents, Rose and William Goodman.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Fromm Institute For Lifelong Learning – via http://fromm.usfca.edu or mail to 2130 Fulton St., San Francisco, CA 94117-1080.

Ed’s wife and children wish to especially thank all those who have laughed at Ed’s jokes, listened to his stories and made his and his family’s lives that much more wonderful.
