In a game for the ages, mahjong enthusiasts at the Moldaw Residences in Palo Alto hosted young players from the neighboring Oshman Family JCC afterschool enrichment program during a fun, intergenerational exchange in December.
“Mahjong has been a part of my life ever since I was a little girl,” said Moldaw resident Phyllis Tuber. “The game is one that I enjoyed playing with my mother and my own children.
“Having the opportunity to share my knowledge of and experience with the game with young new learners was very meaningful. Throughout our lives, we pass along our knowledge of what we have learned, and this was the perfect opportunity to share our insight with the children.”
Said Salina Nunez, a program associate for youth and camp at the JCC, “Watching the children interact with the residents was a true joy. In life we can learn so much from each other, and for the children particularly, this was a unique opportunity to sit down and have fun while learning from members of an older generation.”
Prior to their Moldaw visit, the children studied and practiced mahjong in their “Mind Games” afterschool class. The games provide an opportunity for players of all ages to think critically in order to challenge their opponents.
