Six people were killed and dozens wounded Friday in a suspected terror attack near the site of the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Three gunmen were at large after opening fire at Munich’s Olympia-Einkaufszentrum shopping mall, several media outlets reported. The shooting began in a McDonald’s there shortly after 6 p.m.
A Munich police spokesman said at least three attackers were “armed with long guns,” according to the Washington Post. The paper reported that a message posted online from an account apparently connected to the Islamic State said, “Nowhere is safe for all of you. You people have opened the doors of hell by declaring war on us.”
Police closed Munich’s transit system and put the city on lockdown as they hunted for the perpetrators.
The mall is adjacent to the Munich Olympic stadium, near where Palestinian terrorists took 11 Israeli athletes hostage and then killed them during the 1972 Games.
None of the perpetrators or victims had yet been identified. — jta
