Life and death in the Old Country: Written in 1998, a year before he died of cancer, Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin’s final play, “Ashkava” (“Requiem”), will be making its U.S. debut in the South Bay next week, with six more performances to follow. Performed in Hebrew with English supertitles, the play is based on three short stories by Anton Chekhov. The Jewish Circle Theatre calls the play “stirring” and “thought-provoking.” 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at Starbright Theater, 1770 W. Campbell Ave., Campbell. $35.
