Training artists and providing outstanding theatrical productions, American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) has enlivened the San Francisco theater scene since 1965. Trained actors who have gone on to luminous careers include Annette Bening, Nicolas Cage and Danny Glover. Each season offers outstanding performances that range from the traditional to the extraordinary.

Berkeley Repertory Theatre

A Tony Award winner for outstanding regional theater, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, with two stages and a school, has grown from a storefront stage launched in 1968 to a nationally renowned arts organization. It launches new works, many of which have gone on to Broadway, and often puts its own spin on classic dramas and musicals.

 

SOUTH BAY/PENINSULA

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley started in 1969 and presents plays in Palo Alto and Mountain View, serving some 100,000 patrons annually. The eight-play repertoire features both dramas and musicals, as well as U.S. and regional premieres. It also hosts a summer New Works Festival, plus camps for kids and workshops for adults.

 

NORTH BAY

Marin Theatre Company

Based in Mill Valley, Marin Theatre Company produces a six-show season of provocative new plays by American playwrights, including at least one world premiere annually. It also offers a four-play series for young audiences as well as classes. It awards annual prizes for emerging playwrights and new works.
