House of Bagels brought its recipe from Brooklyn to San Francisco in 1962. They don’t rush their bagels; they allow them to rest overnight, to “proof” so they can achieve bagel perfection.  Then the bagels are boiled in water before they are baked on stone, producing the best (or among the best!) bagels West of the Mississippi. The shop, which houses a New York-style deli, bakes its breads daily, including challah and rye. Lots of other foods to choose from on their menus, so definitely not just a breakfast stop.

Perhaps making it into every issue of Readers’ Choice is Izzy’s, a popular kosher eatery in Palo Alto offering nearly 20 varieties of Brooklyn-style “unassimilated bagels,” plus wild lox, shmears, salads and cookies.
