Daily Driver

(415) 852-3535 •

Daily Driver arrives onto the pages of J.’s Readers’ Choice, fresh and hot in their orange striped delivery van! Three locations now: Dogpatch, where they started, along with the Ferry Building and Ghirardelli Square. The company is a three-way marriage of organic wood-fired bagels, hand-batted organic butter and cream cheese (and quark, a yogurt/cottage cousin). Plus they offer trade-direct small-batch java from Red Bay. Catering, delivery and pick up available — check the website for details.

House of Bagels

(415) 752-6000  •

House of Bagels brought its recipe from Brooklyn to San Francisco in 1962. They don’t rush their bagels; they allow them to rest overnight, to “proof” so they can achieve bagel perfection.  Then the bagels are boiled in water before they are baked on stone, producing the best (or among the best!) bagels West of the Mississippi. The shop, which houses a New York-style deli, bakes its breads daily, including challah and rye. Lots of other foods to choose from on their menus, so definitely not just a breakfast stop.

Boichik Bagels

(510) 858-5189 •

In a short time, Boichik baked its way into the hearts, minds and stomachs of J. readers. Now firmly established in Berkeley, Boichik serves up not only incredibly delish bagels but shmears, fish and salads to please any discriminating New York (or other) palette. Order online, delivery all over the Bay Area on specific weekly schedule.

Izzy’s Brooklyn Bagels

(650) 329-0700 •

Perhaps making it into every issue of Readers’ Choice is Izzy’s, a popular kosher eatery in Palo Alto offering nearly 20 varieties of Brooklyn-style “unassimilated bagels,” plus wild lox, shmears, salads and cookies. It also serves breakfast and lunch, and caters to Silicon Valley homes and businesses. With their other award in the Readers’ Choice Jewish Restaurant category, Izzy’s is a sure winner!

New York Bagels

(415) 381-3599

There it is — returning to the J. Readers’ Choice list. They must be doing lots of things right at New York Bagels. Serving up great New York-style bagels and breakfast bagel sandwiches — why not try the Ellis Island, Chicken Cuban or Asian Chicken sandwiches, or the Empire State or Times Square options for a bit of nostalgia for those far from their East Coast roots.
