Judit Ertsey
March 24, 1933–July 7, 2026
Judit Kalman Ertsey was born in Romania on March 24, 1933, and passed away in San Francisco on July 7, 2026. Beloved wife of the late Janos Ertsey; loving mother of Robert and daughter-in-law Gilda; and proud grandmother of Eliana and Roxanne. She loved art, music and nature. Judit deeply believed in family values and was extremely loyal to friends.
She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
Funeral services were held at Hills of Eternity, Colma. Donations in her memory may be made to KQED, KDFC or a charity of your choice.

Marc Usatin
April 5, 1949-July 4, 2026
Marc Usatin, a career neonatologist/pediatrician and founding president of Congregation B’nai Tikvah in Walnut Creek, died on July 4, 2026 at his home in Davis, surrounded by his devoted family.
Marc grew up in the Bronx, studied medicine in Belgium and at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York. He completed his training at UCSF and joined Kaiser Walnut Creek in 1979. Over the next few years, Marc, together with others, would start a new synagogue in his living room that would eventually become Congregation B‘nai Tikvah in Walnut Creek, California. Marc was committed to the Reform Jewish camp movement and spent many summers as a volunteer physician and medical director at URJ Camp Swig/Newman. He will be remembered by many families for his meaningful work as a mohel, welcoming newborns into the Jewish tradition. Later, Marc served on the board of the Reutlinger Center for Jewish Aging in Danville. Marc’s dedication to Congregation B’nai Tikvah and to the wider East Bay Jewish community will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
Marc is survived by his wife Deborah; daughters Rebekah, Danielle and Marissa; and six grandchildren.
Services were held in Walnut Creek at Congregation B’nai Tikvah. Donations can be made to Blood Cancer United (formerly the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) or the Marc Usatin and James Cohen Memorial Fund which assists young people with fees for Jewish camp.
Phil Winslow
Phil Winslow passed away May 19, 2026, just short of his 83rd birthday. Born and raised in San Francisco, he was an active member of AZA in high school. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1966 with a degree in Accounting, later earning a Master’s in Taxation from Golden Gate University. He worked for the IRS, then had a private accounting practice for over 50 years.
Phil was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, starting his family in Oakland and subsequently moving to Walnut Creek. His friendliness was his calling card—he often started conversations with complete strangers in a way that made it instantly feel like they were longtime acquaintances. This part of his personality also extended to his career, as many of his clients became friends.
He enjoyed listening to music, watching sports, playing basketball and jogging, and he was a voracious reader.
Phil will be deeply missed by so many for his love, friendship and kindness, but he will long be remembered for all those same reasons. He is survived by his wife, Bev; children, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) and Janna; and grandchildren, Melania (Michael) and Nieves.
