The fifth annual Walk to End Genocide is scheduled for April 14 in Santa Rosa. Gabe Ferrick, a high school senior, coordinates the walk every year with support from the social justice committee at Congregation Shomrei Torah in Santa Rosa.
“My efforts [over the years] have yielded over $102,000 donated to Jewish World Watch for genocide survivors and those impacted by human rights abuses,” Ferrick reports.
A 2011 winner of a prestigious Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award, Ferrick also notes that he is mentoring two teens who will take over organizing the walk when he goes to college next year.
The three-mile family-friendly walk begins and ends at Shomrei Torah, 2600 Bennett Valley Road. More than 300 people participated last year, raising a record $23,000.
Check-in and registration is from 8 to 8:45 a.m., with the walk starting at 9 a.m. There will be music, children’s activities and short speeches by state Assemblyman Marc Levine and synagogue clergy.
