Two Bay Area 19-year-olds, Skylar Dorosin of Palo Alto and Talia Young of Lafayette, were among the 10 teens from across the country to be presented with 2013 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards in an Aug. 26 ceremony in San Francisco.
The teens received $36,000 each to support their philanthropic visions or to further their educations. Dorosin established a program that teaches swimming and water polo to girls from low-income communities, and Young ran a poetry club for high school students.
The ceremony and luncheon were held in the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco’s Merchants Exchange building. Attendees included Andy David, the S.F.-based Israeli consul general; Eyal Naor, the new S.F.-based deputy consul general for Israel; Brenda Villa, a four-time Olympian in water polo; Steven Dinkelspiel, president and publisher of San Francisco magazine; and Laura Lauder, Bay Area philanthropist.
This was the first year teens outside of California were eligible for the award. For information on nominating someone for a 2014 award, visit www.dillerteenawards.org.
