Camp Sukkat Shalom provided a festive Shabbat experience at this year’s Burning Man festival, held Aug. 26 to Sept. 2 in Black Rock City, Nev. Organized by a Bay Area contingent of Jewish burners, the “Tent of Peace” camp drew hundreds for its Friday night service and free Shabbat dinner. Service co-leader Aviva Frank and Simone Adler dance to welcome Shabbat.

After dark, an open Star of David illuminated the “tent.” Elsewhere on the playa, the Israeli group MidBurn constructed a 20-foot hamsa, the “Hand of Inspiration,” which lit up every night until its ceremonial burning on Sept. 2. Some 58,000 people attended the desert festival, among them several hundred Israelis. — j. staff
