Levana Kirschenbaum, who opened what is considered the country’s first upscale kosher restaurant, will stage a cooking workshop at Congregation Chevra Thilim in San Francisco on Monday, Nov. 18.

The author of five cookbooks, including “The Whole Foods Kosher Kitchen,” Kirschenbaum will give a Thanksgivukkah cooking demonstration, which will be followed by a meal.

For 32 years, Kirschenbaum was the co-owner of Levana Restaurant on the Upper West Side in Manhattan, considered a pioneer in kosher upscale dining before it closed in 2009. For example, it was the first kosher restaurant to add bison and venison to its menu. In recent years, Kirschenbaum has gained a following for her practical and nutritious approach to kosher cooking.

The workshop begins at 6:30 p.m. at Chevra Thilim, 751-25th Ave., S.F. The cost is $36. Reservations are required, but will be taken right up until the start of the event at www.tinyurl.com/levana-cooking. For additional information, send an email to [email protected] or call (415) 752-2866.
