Israeli director Ari Folman has committed to writing and directing an animated feature based on the life of Anne Frank, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Folman’s 2008 animated film “Waltz With Bashir,” about the 1982 invasion of Lebanon, was nominated for an Oscar. His latest film, “The Congress,” recently won the European Film Award for best European animation.

Folman called implementation of the project “a fantastic opportunity and challenge.”

The Anne Frank Fonds, a charitable foundation set up by her father, Otto Frank, and based in Basel, Switzerland, has granted the filmmaker total access to its archives.

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2014. — jta
